All HO car kits are now available as "Econo-Kits" denoted by "ek" in the kit number. "E-K" products include only items that are SMMW-generated or hard to get, such as resin castings, etchings, decals and instructions. Parts produced by other manufacturers, such as brake gear, trucks, couplers, wire, steps/ladders and styrene strip are omitted. The "E-K" option allows modelers to complete a kit using parts they already have or to replace kit parts to reflect personal preferences.

The Southern Ry. "Silverside" gondola was the 2nd car built from Aluminum by Pullman-Standard (the 4000-series covered hopper was first).
750 were delivered in 1960 wearing the colorful "Vermillion" stenciling arrangement. Green appeared in the mid-1960s; both schemes survived into the late 1990s. All were retired 2004-2005.
